Schlage Locks: Setting the Industry Standard

Residential and Commercial Security

The New and Innovative Schlage B-500 Series Grade 2 Commercial Deadbolt

The Schlage B-500 Series Commercial Deadbolt recently celebrated its first birthday.  Like any “parent,” Schlage continues to take pride in this “baby” of a lock, which promises to become a best-selling staple for commercial property and business owners around the world.

The B-500 was launched in September of 2007 as a joint effort between Schlage and professional locksmiths.  The goal was to create a product that:

1) Would be able to fit with every Schlage cylinder on the market,

2) Would enhance the strength of the lock on the door’s  jamb side,

3) Would be difficult or impossible to pick.

The  Schlage B-500 Series was designed with several enhancements to accomplish these goals.  For starters, its bolt is ten percent larger in diameter than those of most typical deadbolts.  This is a significant amount of extra metal (zinc), making its bolt stronger and more resistant to damage, including opening by force (vandalism, break-and-enter).  Lodged inside the zinc bolt is a revolutionary metal core.  This core spins in response to a sawing motion, making the bolt impossible to saw through.

Anti-picking measures are stepped up in the Schlage B-500.  It’s outfitted with an anti-pry shield behind the latch.  Not only does this make the lock extremely difficult to pick, it also holds the lock securely in place during installation, a nice perk for professional locksmiths, contractors and general handymen.

The issue of extra strength on the jamb side was addressed by a thicker strike and a third screw.  The extra screw rests inside the cup, anchoring it even deeper  into the door jamb.

Finally, in a move that the Schlage Company refers to as “unprecedented,” the B-500 deadbolt has an adjustable backset with a helix design.  This allows it to be locked into place with no need to adjust during installation, another bonus for contractors.

Since the Schlage B-500 fits into any existing Schlage cylinder, it’s simple and efficient to upgrade your current deadbolt.  The B-500 is UL listed for a three-hour fire door.  It is available in four versatile finishes to match virtually any decor and architecture.  The B-500 Series is undoubtedly poised to become the new standard by which all other lock companies will strive to imitate.
